B2 · Ünite 4: Bağlaçlar ve geçişler (Moreover, nevertheless)

YDS bağlaçları: whereas, provided that, unless, so that, in case

Metin: Making the paragraphs talk to each other

Nevertheless,]]) dikkat edin.

Daniel: So, Selin, I've read your essay on remote work. Your ideas are strong; however, the sentences don't connect very well.
Evet Selin, uzaktan çalışma üzerine denemeni okudum. Fikirlerin güçlü; ancak cümleler birbirine pek iyi bağlanmıyor.

Selin: I know. I keep writing short sentences one after another because I'm afraid of making mistakes.
Biliyorum. Hata yapmaktan korktuğum için arka arkaya kısa cümleler yazıp duruyorum.

Daniel: That's normal. Look at your first paragraph: 'Remote work saves time. It can be lonely.' How are these two ideas related?

Selin: They contrast with each other, so I need a contrast word: 'Even though remote work saves time, it can be lonely.'

Daniel: Exactly. Or you could write two sentences: 'Remote work saves time. Nevertheless, it can be lonely.' Notice the period and the comma.
Aynen.

Selin: So 'even though' joins two clauses in one sentence, whereas 'nevertheless' begins a new sentence.
Yani “even though” iki yan cümleyi tek cümlede birleştiriyor, “nevertheless” ise yeni bir cümle başlatıyor.

Daniel: Perfect, and you've just used 'whereas' correctly as well! Now, your second paragraph lists the advantages.
Mükemmel, üstelik az önce “whereas”ı da doğru kullandın! Şimdi, ikinci paragrafın avantajları sıralıyor.

Selin: Yes. Employees spend less on transportation. Moreover, they can plan their own schedules. In addition, companies need smaller offices.
Evet.

Daniel: Good, but don't start every sentence with 'moreover', or your reader will get tired of it. Vary them a little.

Selin: OK. What about the disadvantages paragraph? I wrote 'on the other hand' there to add one more point.
Tamam. Peki dezavantajlar paragrafı? Oraya bir madde daha eklemek için “on the other hand” yazdım.

Daniel: Careful: 'on the other hand' introduces a different side of the argument, not just another point. For a new point, use 'furthermore'.
Dikkat: “on the other hand” tartışmanın öbür yüzünü getirir, sıradan bir ek madde değil. Yeni bir madde için “furthermore” kullan.

Selin: Got it. And in my conclusion I wrote: 'If workers don't have a quiet room, remote work isn't a good idea.'

Daniel: That's correct, but 'unless' is shorter: 'Unless workers have a quiet room, remote work isn't a good idea.'

Selin: Wait, 'unless' already means 'if not', so I shouldn't write 'unless they don't have', right?
Dur, “unless” zaten “-mezse” demek, o hâlde “unless they don't have” yazmamalıyım, değil mi?

Daniel: Right. For a more formal tone, try 'provided that': 'Remote work can be productive provided that employees have clear goals.'
Doğru. Daha resmî bir ton için “provided that”i dene: “Çalışanların net hedefleri olması şartıyla uzaktan çalışma verimli olabilir.”

Selin: And 'as long as' means almost the same thing, doesn't it?
“As long as” da hemen hemen aynı anlama geliyor, değil mi?

Daniel: Yes, it's just less formal. One last thing: you wrote 'Companies should train managers for they can lead remote teams.'
Evet, yalnızca daha az resmî. Son bir şey: “Companies should train managers for they can lead remote teams.” yazmışsın.

Selin: Oh no. It should be 'so that they can lead remote teams', or simply 'in order to lead remote teams'.
Eyvah. “so that they can lead remote teams” ya da kısaca “in order to lead remote teams” olmalı.

Daniel: Great. I'll send you a list of linking words in case you need it while you're revising.
Harika. Düzeltme yaparken ihtiyacın olur diye sana bir bağlaç listesi göndereceğim.

Selin: Thanks! I'll rewrite the essay tonight so that you can check it before our next lesson.

Karşıtlık bağlaçları: although, even though, whereas, while

although / though-mesine rağmen, -se deAlthough it was late, she kept working.Geç olmasına rağmen çalışmaya devam etti.
even though-mesine rağmen (güçlü vurgu)Even though he studied hard, he failed.Çok çalışmasına rağmen kaldı.
whereasoysa, … iken (iki şeyi kıyaslar)Ali likes tea, whereas Deniz prefers coffee.Ali çayı sever, oysa Deniz kahveyi tercih eder.
whileiken; oysaWhile some people love cities, others prefer villages.Bazı insanlar şehirleri severken diğerleri köyleri tercih eder.

💡 Bağlaçlı yan cümle başa gelirse sonuna virgül konur: Although it rained, we went out. Sona gelirse genellikle virgül gerekmez: We went out although it rained. whereas ise çoğunlukla virgülle ayrılır: …, whereas …

⚠️ Türklerin tipik hatası 1: Türkçedeki “…mesine rağmen, ama …” alışkanlığıyla tek cümlede iki bağlaç kullanmak. Although it was expensive, but we bought it. ✗ → Although it was expensive, we bought it. ✓ ya da It was expensive, but we bought it.

Despite it was late … ✓ Despite being tired … ✓ Tam cümle getirecekseniz although ya da despite the fact that kullanın: Despite the fact that it was late … ✓

Cümle başı geçişleri: however, nevertheless, on the other hand, in contrast

howeverkarşıtlıkThe plan was good. However, it was too expensive.Plan iyiydi. Ancak çok pahalıydı.
nevertheless / nonethelessbeklenmeyen sonuçHe had a fever. Nevertheless, he came to work.Ateşi vardı. Yine de işe geldi.
on the other handkonunun öbür yüzüCities offer jobs. On the other hand, they are noisy.Şehirler iş imkânı sunar. Öte yandan gürültülüdür.
in contrast / by contrastiki şeyin farkıSales rose in May. In contrast, June was weak.Satışlar mayısta arttı. Buna karşılık haziran zayıftı.

💡 however cümlenin ortasında da durabilir; o zaman iki virgül arasına alınır: The plan, however, was too expensive. Akademik yazıda bu kullanım çok yaygındır. but ise yalnızca iki cümlenin arasında durur ve virgülden sonra gelir: …, but …

⚠️ Türklerin tipik hatası 1: however ile iki cümleyi virgülle bağlamak (“virgül hatası”). The plan was good, however it was expensive. ✗ → The plan was good. However, it was expensive. ✓ ya da The plan was good; however, it was expensive. ✓ ya da The plan was good, but it was expensive. ✓

⚠️ Türklerin tipik hatası 2: on the other handi “ayrıca, bir de” anlamında kullanmak. Türkçede “öte yandan” bazen yeni bir madde eklemek için de söylenir; İngilizcede ise on the other hand mutlaka karşı bir görüş getirir. Cities have jobs. On the other hand, they have good hospitals. ✗ (iki avantaj!) → … Furthermore, they have good hospitals. ✓

Ekleme ve sonuç: moreover, furthermore, in addition · therefore, consequently, as a result

💡 therefore cümle içinde de kullanılabilir: The data was incomplete and therefore unreliable. (Veri eksikti ve bu nedenle güvenilmezdi.) Konuşmada aynı anlam için çoğu zaman yalnızca so denir: It was late, so we left.

⚠️ Türklerin tipik hatası 1: in addition todan sonra fiilin yalın hâlini kullanmak. Buradaki to bir edattır, mastar işareti değil. In addition to teach, she writes books. ✗ → In addition to teaching, … ✓ Aynı durum as a result of için de geçerlidir: as a result of the storm ✓

⚠️ Türklerin tipik hatası 2: Sonuç ile nedeni karıştırmak. therefore sonucu, because nedeni getirir. I was ill. Therefore, I stayed at home. ✓ ama I stayed at home. Therefore, I was ill. ✗ (anlam ters!). YDS'de boşluktan sonraki cümle bir öncekinin sonucuysa therefore / consequently, nedeniyse because / since seçilir.

Koşul bağlaçları: unless, provided that, as long as, in case

if dışındaki koşul bağlaçları YDS'nin en sevdiği konulardandır. Her birinin anlamı biraz farklıdır; Türkçedeki “-medikçe, …mesi şartıyla, …dığı sürece, … ihtimaline karşı” karşılıklarını iyi oturtun. Tıpkı if'te olduğu gibi bu bağlaçlardan sonra gelecek anlamı için şimdiki geniş zaman kullanılır, will gelmez.

İngilizceAnlamÖrnekTürkçe
unlessif … not: -medikçe, -mezseYou won't pass unless you study.Çalışmazsan geçemezsin.
provided (that) / providing…mesi şartıyla (resmî)You can borrow it provided that you return it.Geri getirmen şartıyla ödünç alabilirsin.
as long as…dığı süreceYou can stay as long as you're quiet.Sessiz olduğun sürece kalabilirsin.
in case…ihtimaline karşı (önlem)Take an umbrella in case it rains.Yağmur yağabilir diye şemsiye al.
otherwiseaksi hâlde, yoksaHurry up. Otherwise, we'll miss the bus.Acele et. Yoksa otobüsü kaçıracağız.

💡 in case ile if farkı: I'll take my laptop if I need it. = İhtiyacım olursa alırım (önce ihtiyaç, sonra eylem). I'll take my laptop in case I need it. = Ne olur ne olmaz, ihtiyacım olabilir diye şimdiden alırım. in case of ise isimle kullanılır: In case of fire, use the stairs.

Türkçede “-medikçe” zaten olumsuzluk taşır, ama öğrenci yine de not ekler: Unless you don't study, you will fail. ✗ → Unless you study, you will fail. ✓ (= If you don't study, you will fail.)

⚠️ Türklerin tipik hatası 2: Koşul bağlacından sonra will kullanmak. Türkçede “gelecek olursa” diye düşünüp in case it will rain ✗ / provided that he will come ✗ yazılır. Doğrusu: in case it rains ✓ provided that he comes ✓ Gelecek anlamını ana cümledeki will verir.

Amaç: so that, in order to, so as to

İngilizcede iki yol vardır: aynı özne için mastar (to, in order to, so as to), ayrı bir cümle kurmak için so that. so thatten sonra özne ve genellikle bir yardımcı fiil gelir: şimdi/gelecek için can / will, geçmiş için could / would.

İngilizceYapıÖrnekTürkçe
to / in order to+ fiil (V1)She moved to Ankara in order to find a job.İş bulmak için Ankara'ya taşındı.
so as to+ fiil (V1), resmîWe left early so as to avoid the traffic.Trafiğe yakalanmamak için erken çıktık.
in order not to / so as not toolumsuz amaçI spoke quietly so as not to wake the baby.Bebeği uyandırmamak için sessizce konuştum.
so that+ özne + can/will/could/wouldI'll explain it again so that everyone understands.Herkes anlasın diye tekrar açıklayacağım.

💡 Özne değişiyorsa mastar yetmez, so that gerekir: I opened the window so that my son could breathe. (pencereyi ben açtım, nefes alan oğlum). Aynı özne için iki yol da doğrudur: I study hard to pass = I study hard so that I can pass.

⚠️ Türklerin tipik hatası: “-mek için”i for ile çevirmek. I came here for learn English. ✗ I came for to learn. ✗ Companies train managers for they can lead. ✗ → I came here to learn English. ✓ … so that they can lead. ✓ for amaç bildirirken yalnızca isimle kullanılır: I came here for a meeting. ✓ Ayrıca olumsuz amaçta sıra in order not to ✓ olur; in order to not günlükte duyulsa da sınavda kabul edilmez.

Sınavda however çok tanıdık geldiği için boşluktan sonra tam cümle de olsa seçilir: ___ it was raining, we went out. → However ✗ (virgül hatası doğurur), Although ✓ Yine because of ile because karıştırılır: because of the rain ✓ because it rained ✓ because of it rained ✗
