Noun clauses: that / whether / what / wh- · dolaylı soru
Metin: The day before the client meeting
Soru sözcüklerinden sonra gelen düz cümle sırasına ([[I don't know whether they've read it]]) ve [[what]] ile başlayan özne cümleciklerine ([[What matters is …]]) dikkat edin.
Elif: Mark, do you have a minute? I'm not sure what I'm supposed to do before tomorrow's meeting.
Mark, bir dakikan var mı? Yarınki toplantıdan önce ne yapmam gerektiğinden emin değilim.
Mark: Sure. What matters most is that the client understands the new timeline.
Tabii. En önemlisi, müşterinin yeni zaman çizelgesini anlaması.
Elif: OK. But I don't know whether they've read our proposal yet.
Tamam. Ama teklifimizi okuyup okumadıklarını bilmiyorum.
Mark: Good point. Could you find out if they received the email we sent on Monday?
İyi bir nokta. Pazartesi gönderdiğimiz e-postayı alıp almadıklarını öğrenebilir misin?
Elif: I've already called them. Their assistant asked me who would be presenting and how long it would take.
Mark: And what did you tell her?
Peki ona ne söyledin?
Elif: I said that I wasn't sure yet. I didn't know whether you wanted to present it yourself.
Henüz emin olmadığımı söyledim. Sunumu kendin yapmak isteyip istemediğini bilmiyordum.
Mark: Honestly, it doesn't matter who presents. What they want to see is a realistic plan.
Açıkçası kimin sunduğu önemli değil. Görmek istedikleri şey gerçekçi bir plan.
Elif: The fact that we're two weeks behind schedule worries me, though.
Yine de iki hafta geride olmamız beni endişelendiriyor.
Mark: It's true that we're late. But it's important that we explain why, instead of hiding it.
Geciktiğimiz doğru. Ama bunu saklamak yerine nedenini açıklamamız önemli.
Elif: Do you know why the testing took so long? I joined the team after it had started.
Mark: Basically, nobody knew how many devices the app had to support. That's what caused the delay.
Kısacası, uygulamanın kaç cihazı desteklemesi gerektiğini kimse bilmiyordu. Gecikmeye neden olan buydu.
Elif: I see. I wonder if we should show them the test results as well.
Anlıyorum. Acaba onlara test sonuçlarını da göstermeli miyiz?
Mark: Yes. I'd suggest that you prepare one slide with the main numbers.
Evet. Ana rakamları gösteren tek bir slayt hazırlamanı öneririm.
Elif: Fine. Whatever they ask, I'll try to answer. But what if they ask about the budget?
Peki. Ne sorarlarsa cevaplamaya çalışacağım. Ama ya bütçeyi sorarlarsa?
Mark: Then tell them that I'll send the details by Friday. Whoever asks, the answer is the same.
O zaman ayrıntıları cumaya kadar göndereceğimi söyle. Kim sorarsa sorsun, cevap aynı.
Elif: Could you tell me where their office is? I've never been there.
Ofislerinin nerede olduğunu söyleyebilir misin? Hiç gitmedim.
Mark: It's in Maslak, on the fifth floor. And don't worry: what you've prepared is already more than enough.
Maslak'ta, beşinci katta. Ve merak etme: hazırladıkların zaten fazlasıyla yeterli.
Elif: Thanks, Mark. I'm just glad that someone told me what to expect.
Teşekkürler, Mark. Birinin bana neyle karşılaşacağımı söylemesine çok sevindim.
Dilbilgisi
that ile isim cümleciği: I know that … · It is important that … · The fact that …
İngilizcede fiil isimleşmez; başına that konur ve arkasından tam bir cümle gelir: I know that he came. Günlük dilde nesne konumundaki that çoğu zaman atılır: I know he came.
| İngilizce | Görev | Türkçe |
|---|---|---|
| I think (that) the plan is realistic. | nesne | Planın gerçekçi olduğunu düşünüyorum. |
| She said (that) she wasn't sure. | nesne | Emin olmadığını söyledi. |
| It's true that we're late. | gizli özne (It … that) | Geciktiğimiz doğru. |
| The fact that we're late worries me. | özne | Geç kalmamız beni endişelendiriyor. |
| I'm glad (that) you called. | sıfat + that | Aramana sevindim. |
- It's obvious that she has worked very hard. — Çok çalıştığı apaçık.
- The fact that he apologized surprised everyone. — Özür dilemesi herkesi şaşırttı.
- I'm afraid that the shop is already closed. — Korkarım dükkân çoktan kapanmış.
💡 That ile başlayan bir cümleciği özne yapmak mümkündür (That he lied is clear.) ama ağır ve resmî duyulur. İngilizler ve Amerikalılar bunun yerine gizli özne it kullanır: It is clear that he lied. Akademik yazıda çok sık görülen kalıplar: It is clear / likely / possible / important / essential that …
⚠️ Türklerin tipik hatası: Türkçedeki isim-fiili (“-dığını”, “-mesini”) birebir aktarıp cümle yerine isim kullanmak. I know his coming late. ✗ I heard their moving to Izmir. ✗ → I know (that) he came late. ✓ I heard (that) they were moving to Izmir. ✓ Ayrıca gizli öznede it düşürülür: Is important that we explain. ✗ → It's important that we explain. ✓
Dolaylı soru: soru sözcüğünden sonra düz cümle sırası
B1'de dolaylı anlatımda soruları aktarmayı gördük (She asked where I lived.). Aynı kural, bir sorunun başka bir cümlenin içine yerleştiği her durumda geçerlidir: I don't know …, Do you know …?, I wonder …, Tell me …, It doesn't matter …. Soru sözcüğünden sonra soru sırası değil, düz cümle sırası gelir (özne + yüklem) ve do / does / did kullanılmaz.
| Doğrudan soru | İsim cümleciği içinde | Türkçe |
|---|---|---|
| Where is their office? | Could you tell me where their office is? | Ofislerinin nerede olduğunu söyler misin? |
| Why did the testing take so long? | Do you know why the testing took so long? | Testin neden uzun sürdüğünü biliyor musun? |
| Who will present? | She asked who would present. | Kimin sunum yapacağını sordu. |
| How many devices does it support? | Nobody knew how many devices it supported. | Kaç cihazı desteklediğini kimse bilmiyordu. |
- I'm not sure what I'm supposed to do. — Ne yapmam gerektiğinden emin değilim.
- It doesn't matter who presents. — Kimin sunduğu önemli değil.
- Can you remember where you parked the car? — Arabayı nereye park ettiğini hatırlayabiliyor musun?
💡 Soru sözcüğü cümleciğin öznesi ise sıra zaten değişmez: Who called? → I don't know who called. What happened? → Tell me what happened. Ana cümle soruysa sondaki soru işaretini ana cümle belirler: Do you know where she lives? (soru) ↔ I wonder where she lives. (düz cümle, nokta).
⚠️ Türklerin tipik hatası: Türkçede kelime sırası değişmediği için öğrenci doğrudan sorunun sırasını korur. Do you know where is the station? ✗ I don't know what does he want. ✗ Can you tell me why did you leave? ✗ → Do you know where the station is? ✓ I don't know what he wants. ✓ Can you tell me why you left? ✓
whether ve if: … olup olmadığını
Evet/hayır sorusu bir cümlenin içine girerken whether ya da if ile bağlanır. Türkçedeki karşılığı “-ip -mediğini”, “… mı değil mi”dir: I don't know whether they've read it. = Okuyup okumadıklarını bilmiyorum. Günlük konuşmada if daha yaygındır; ancak bazı yerlerde yalnızca whether kullanılabilir.
| Durum | whether | if | Örnek |
|---|---|---|---|
| fiilden sonra nesne | ✓ | ✓ | I wonder whether/if they'll come. |
| hemen arkasından or not | ✓ | ✗ | I don't know whether or not he agrees. |
| edattan sonra | ✓ | ✗ | It depends on whether the client agrees. |
| to + fiil ile | ✓ | ✗ | I can't decide whether to go. |
| cümlenin öznesi olarak başta | ✓ | ✗ | Whether he comes isn't important. |
- Could you find out if they received our email? — E-postamızı alıp almadıklarını öğrenebilir misin?
- The price depends on whether you book online. — Fiyat, çevrim içi rezervasyon yapıp yapmadığınıza bağlı.
- She hasn't decided whether to accept the offer. — Teklifi kabul edip etmeyeceğine karar vermedi.
💡 or not cümlenin sonuna da gelebilir; o zaman if de mümkündür: I don't know if he agrees or not. ✓ whether ve weather (hava) aynı okunur: “WE-dır”. Yazarken karıştırmayın.
⚠️ Türklerin tipik hatası: Evet/hayır sorusunu that ile bağlamak. “Okuyup okumadıklarını bilmiyorum” cümlesi I don't know that they've read it. Belirsizlik varsa whether / if ✓ gerekir. Bir de ifi soru sırasıyla kullanmak: I wonder if should we show them. ✗ → I wonder if we should show them. ✓
what ile isim cümleciği: What matters is … · That's what …
what isim cümleciğinde “-dığı şey” anlamına gelir (= the thing that).
|---|---|---|
| What matters is the result. | özne | Önemli olan sonuçtur. |
| What they want to see is a realistic plan. | özne | Görmek istedikleri şey gerçekçi bir plandır. |
| I don't understand what you mean. | nesne | Ne demek istediğini anlamıyorum. |
| That's what caused the delay. | yüklem tamamlayıcısı | Gecikmeye neden olan buydu. |
| What you've prepared is enough. | özne | Hazırladığın şey yeterli. |
- What I need right now is a cup of coffee. — Şu an ihtiyacım olan şey bir fincan kahve.
- She told me what to expect. — Bana neyle karşılaşacağımı söyledi.
- What worries me is the budget. — Beni endişelendiren şey bütçe.
💡 What … is … yapısı cümlenin bir parçasını vurgulamak için kullanılır: The client wants a realistic plan. → What the client wants is a realistic plan. What … is ile başlayan cümlede ikinci kısım fiilse to + fiil gelir: What I want is to rest.
⚠️ Türklerin tipik hatası 1: “-dığı şey”i kelimesi kelimesine çevirmek. The thing what I need is time. ✗ → What I need is time. ✓ ya da The thing (that) I need is time. ✓ what zaten “şey”i içerir; ikisi birlikte kullanılmaz. Aynı biçimde All what I know ✗ → All (that) I know ✓
What do they want is a plan. ✗ → What they want is a plan. ✓ What I want is go home. ✗ → What I want is to go home. ✓
suggest / recommend / insist that + yalın fiil
suggest, recommend, insist, demand, propose gibi öneri ve istek bildiren fiillerden ve It is important / essential / necessary that … gibi kalıplardan sonra gelen that cümleciğinde fiil yalın hâlde kalır; 3. tekil şahısta bile -s almaz. İngiliz İngilizcesinde araya sık sık should eklenir.
|---|---|---|
| I suggest that you prepare one slide. | yalın fiil | Tek bir slayt hazırlamanı öneririm. |
| The doctor recommended that he rest. | rests değil, rest | Doktor dinlenmesini tavsiye etti. |
| She insisted that we (should) stay. | should isteğe bağlı | Kalmamızda ısrar etti. |
| It's essential that every student be on time. | is değil, be (resmî) | Her öğrencinin zamanında gelmesi şarttır. |
- I'd suggest that you prepare one slide with the main numbers. — Ana rakamları gösteren tek bir slayt hazırlamanı öneririm.
- The manager suggested having a short break. — Müdür kısa bir ara vermeyi önerdi.
- It's important that we explain why we're late. — Neden geciktiğimizi açıklamamız önemli.
💡 suggest fiilinin üç doğru kullanımı vardır: suggest that + cümle (I suggest that you go.), suggest + -ing (I suggest going.) ve suggest + isim (I suggest a short break.). Kişiyi nesne yapıp mastar kullanmak ise yanlıştır.
⚠️ Türklerin tipik hatası: Türkçedeki “sana … yapmanı öneririm” sırasını aktarmak. I suggest you to prepare a slide. ✗ He recommended me to see a doctor. ✗ → I suggest (that) you prepare a slide. ✓ He recommended (that) I see a doctor. ✓ Ayrıca 3. tekilde -s eklemek: I suggest that he goes günlük dilde duyulur ama YDS'de ve resmî yazıda that he go / that he should go ✓ beklenir.
-ever sözcükleri ve kibar dolaylı sorular
whatever, whoever, whichever, wherever, whenever, however “her ne / her kim / her nerede …sa” anlamında isim ya da zarf cümleciği başlatır. Türkçedeki “Ne sorarlarsa sorsunlar”, “Kim gelirse gelsin” yapılarına karşılık gelir. Arkalarından yine düz cümle sırası gelir.
- Whatever they ask, I'll try to answer. — Ne sorarlarsa sorsunlar cevaplamaya çalışacağım.
- Whoever finishes first can leave early. — Kim önce bitirirse erken çıkabilir.
- You can sit wherever you like. — İstediğin yere oturabilirsin.
- However hard I try, I can't remember his name.
|---|---|---|
| Where is the meeting room? | Could you tell me where the meeting room is? | Toplantı odasının nerede olduğunu söyler misiniz? |
| Is the report ready? | I was wondering if the report was ready. | Acaba rapor hazır mı diye merak ediyordum. |
| What time does it start? | Do you happen to know what time it starts? | Acaba saat kaçta başladığını biliyor musunuz? |
| Can you help me? | Would you mind telling me how this works? | Bunun nasıl çalıştığını anlatır mısınız? |
💡 What if …? What if they ask about the budget? Arkasından genellikle geniş zaman gelir; hayalî bir durum için geçmiş biçim: What if we moved to Izmir?
⚠️ Türklerin tipik hatası: kibar kalıbın içinde de soru sırasını sürdürmek. Could you tell me what time is it? ✗ Do you happen to know where does she work? ✗ → Could you tell me what time it is? ✓ Do you happen to know where she works?
